Beads for Teaching Basic Facts
Beads are a pleasing tactile resource for young children to learn about basic facts.
Each set has all the combinations up to 9+9 for addition and the corresponding subtraction facts.
The six strategies demonstrated are
Add on 1’s
Add on 2’s
Add on 0’s
Doubles
Doubles plus 1
Make to 10 (Rainbow Facts)
Each string demonstrates a family of four facts (except the doubles)
e.g.

+3 +1 -3 -1
4 4 1 3
There are a variety of ways to use the beads:
Sorting
-Find all the add on two’s
-Find all the strings that have 8 beads
-Write the family of facts for your string
-Growing patterns - adding one each time
