Making Sense Of Maths

Empowering teachers. Discovering the joy, power and pattern of mathematics

Diverse Projects

Isolated School In-class Mentoring at Croydon State School

An isolated school near Normanton in North West Qld has a Teaching Principal and two classroom teachers. With the help of P.C.A.P funding, Danielle (Principal) was able to organize for Jan to do a Mentoring visit the school.

The teachers worked with Jan to give the students many opportunities to discover mathematical concepts and represent them in different ways.

I liked the hands on approach to the teaching of Maths. Jan was very helpful with ideas for the planning and teaching of Maths.
Kylie Foster, Teacher Croydon State School

The students have the opportunity to explore and manipulate objects before any explicit teaching occurs.
Leesa Wickins, Teacher Croydon State School

Jan’s inspiration in maths followed through to teachers and children in such a way that the learning seen in such a short time was “in your face”. Against many constraints in getting Jan here in a remote region we found the effort was well worth it as it gave us new insights into teaching maths to multi-age classes.
Jan’s hands on approach brought maths to life in such a way you could visibly see students learning.
Danielle Morris Principal, Croydon SS

Whole School In-service at Bajool State School

Bajool is a small school in the Rockhampton district.
Jan spent a half day at Bajool visiting each of the classrooms where she worked with the teachers, teacher, aides and students - this was interspersed with remedial work with some students on specific topics.

The highlight for our school was having Jan as part of our teaching staff for half a day. Working with her in a Mathematics lesson the best P.D for teachers and all students enjoyed her high level of enthusiasm and teaching stategies.“
Shona M Boardman, Principal Bajool State School

Whole Staff In-service at Mount Kilcoy State School

Mount Kilcoy had won a numeracy/literacy prize and they were awarded a choice of an in- service providers and topic for a day . They chose numeracy as their topic and Making Sense of Maths as their provider. All staff attended the full day workshop.

Jan used simple inexpensive hands on materials to demonstrate practical and active ways of learning concepts throughout the grades.

Torres Strait Islands visit

At each school Jan worked in classrooms with teachers, teacher aides and students. The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands on interactive activities provided to teach them various mathematical concepts ie: patterns, area and perimeter, 3D and shapes spatial concepts.
