OHT for teaching Money Concepts
The value of money is a difficult concept for young children to grasp. Coins are hands-on and tactile, but the representation is not obvious since the size is not always linked to the value, and the colour/material is an extra attribute to know about.
This resource uses an area model to demonstrate the value of the coins
and link back to a familiar format - the hundred grid.
Giving change is another concept, difficult to grasp, but efficiently
demonstrated with this material.
Envelopes with recycled stamps are a great addition to the set -
and they can be used for many different purposes
e.g. sorting in various ways;
post code,
type of stamp,
value of stamp,
street numbers,
alphabetical order,
grouping in families,
counting out the appropriate coins,
finding different combinations.
